Elaine Miller-Karas, M.S.W., L.C.S.W.
Ms. Miller-Karas has 30 years experience in health education, teaching, social work and advocacy. She co-founded the Trauma Resource Institute (TRI) in 2006 and co-created the Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM), Trauma Resiliency Model-Veteran (TRM-V), Trauma Resiliency Model-Warrior (TRM-W), and Trauma Resiliency Model-Community (TRM-C).
She was the Associate Director of Behavioral Sciences at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center’s Family Practice Residency Program from 1994 until she resigned in 2006 to start TRI. Earlier in her career, she did her graduate internship at Stanford University's Perinatal Outreach Program and worked there as clinician and lecturer until her move to Southern California. She maintains a private practice in Claremont and West Los Angeles, where she specializes in treating trauma. She has presented at major conferences including ISTSS and the Psychotherapy Networker. Ms. Miller-Karas has trained workers and community leaders in social service agencies, hospitals and community agencies nationally and internationally, including in Thailand after the tsunami, in Louisiana after Hurricanes Rita and Katrina, in China after the Sichuan earthquake and in Kenya, Africa. She recently authored a chapter in the book, To the Rescue: Stories of Healthcare Workers at the Scenes of Disaster. Laurie Leitch, Ph.D. L.I.S.W.
Laurie Leitch, Ph.D. has been a clinical trainer, researcher and psychotherapist for over 25 years. She is the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Trauma Resource Institute (TRI), a non-profit trauma training center which provides training in Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM), Trauma Resiliency Model-Veteran (TRM-V), Trauma Resiliency Model-Warrior (TRM-W), and Trauma Resiliency Model-Community (TRM-C).
The three models provide skills-based training in biologically-based trauma treatment appropriate with complex trauma and for use with adults and children suffering from long-term and acute trauma as well as combat-zone trauma. The Veterans’ Resiliency Model is offered in an individual as well as a group treatment format. Dr. Leitch has extensive experience providing clinical training, research, and consultation in diverse and cross-cultural settings. Her experience with complex trauma includes providing treatment following 9/11, treatment and clinical training in southern Thailand after the tsunami, in Louisiana following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and in China following the 5/12/08 earthquake. Dr. Leitch's research has included social program and clinical evaluations for national foundations, the federal government, and non-profit organizations as well as outcome studies of TRM. Recently, Dr. Leitch provided TRM1 training to counselors working with genocide survivors in Rwanda, Africa and to counselors, female prisoners, and Internally-Displaced Persons in Kenya, Africa. She will be a Co-Project Director for the Haiti Earthquake Relief Project (HERP) March - September 2010.Dr. Leitch is on the visiting faculty of the Upaya Zen Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program which orients individuals to service in their local communities. read more. . .
